What does discrimination really do?
Many know about discrimination, but don't know what it does.
We all know about discrimination, but many don't know it's full impact on others. Aside from blatant discrimination, there is also something called subconscious discrimination. Subconscious Discrimination is discrimination that happens in the subconscious part of the mind, making most unaware when they do it. Because of this, many don't know they discriminate others subconsciously, and therefore they tend to deny the fact that they do. But it's not just them, everyone has a subconscious bias one way or the other. The point of our program is to inform these people about their bias using a test made by Project Implicit at Harvard University, and by the end of the program, make them able to control that bias so they are less likely to be discriminatory to others.
Many may ask why we are so passionate about this subject. One main reason we are is because it usually results in some kind of bullying, being cyber or in person. Constantly being bullied and called these names can really ruin a person (speaking from experience). At this organization, we strongly believe in judging someone based on something they cannot change is inequitable and should be put to a stop.
Relating to this, the biggest reason that we are so passionate about this subject is the fact that as we said before, the idea of discrimination is blatantly unfair. Many believe that discrimination is not an important problem to worry about in this day and age, but although this problem may look small, it can lead to influence big decisions. Here's how it works. Two people, same skill level, same activities, and same grades apply for the same college, making the only thing seperating them being their race (one Native American and one Asian). The college that these two applied for accepts the Asian over the Native American over just a problem of race. This is a perfect example of a situation where your whole life is changed by a factor you cannot control. Of course, this can only be a theoretical situation because no two people are so similar, but situations like this are very common, and the idea of discrimination is commonly shown in conditions like these.
In conclusion, subconscious bias/discrimination is something that everyone has but the problem is, most cannot recognize that they do. Our program hopes to find these people and help them recognize and control their bias, so we can have a more free, open, and successful community.
